Alton Towers Exterior at Night

Join the UK Ghost Nights team as we follow in the footsteps of TV’s ‘Most Haunted’ and spend the night investigating the paranormal activity at the famous Alton Towers, the site of one of Britain’s best-known theme parks.

Alton Towers stands on Bunbury Hill, a site that has been used since before Roman times, perhaps as far back as 3000 BC. The current estate began as Alveton Lodge, an occasional summer residence used by the Earls of Shrewsbury. It certainly existed by 1686, although the exact date of construction is unclear. It was the fifteenth Earl of Shrewsbury who, in the early nineteenth century, began work to extend the house and landscape the grounds. The sixteenth Earl continued this work, and in 1832 the name was changed to Alton Towers. Work eventually finished in 1852, producing one of the finest stately homes in Britain, and the beautiful gardens we see today.

The twentieth century saw the upkeep of such a grand building become too much. In 1924 the estate was sold to a private company and the house and gardens opened to the public. During World War 2 the house and grounds were requisitioned as an Officer Cadet Training Unit, eventually being handed back in 1951. John Broome bought the estate in 1978, and began work on the theme park. In 1980 the Alton Towers theme park, for which it is still best known today, was opened.

The many years of occupation have given us many legends and stories of the paranormal, perhaps the most famous of which is the ‘Chained Oak’. It is said that when the fifteenth Earl refused a request for a spare coin from an old woman, she cursed him and said, "For every branch on the Old Oak Tree here that falls, a member of the Earl’s family will die." That night a violent storm caused a branch of the Oak tree to fall, and a member of the Earls family died. The Earl ordered the branches of the Oak chained together so no more branches could fall, and from that day to this the tree remains chained up.

With around fifteen different ghosts reported at Alton Towers, it is sure to be a night to remember. Will you see the Grey Lady, or smell her perfume first? Hear the heavy footsteps often reported, or see the black figure as it wanders through the grounds around the house? Small objects, such as pebbles, are also often thrown at visitors.

So come with us to one of the premier paranormal locations in England, as our Spiritual Medium guides us in our investigations into the Haunting at Alton Towers!

Snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the night.
