Frequently Asked Questions

1. What happens on a ghost hunt event?

Upon arrival guests will be met by a UK Ghost Nights team member and shown to the base room. Once all guests have arrived there will be a short talk introducing the UK Ghost Nights team and mediums, general health and safety information and details of how the evening will be structured.

Guests will then be divided into two groups. One group will be taken on a walk around the venue with the medium, the other will participate in an energy workshop.

During the walk you will be given a brief history of the venue and be able to get your bearings. The medium will also telling you where they feel spirit presences and who they believe it is. The energy workshop consists of instruction in the use of pendulums, dowsing rods, EMF meters, and how to become more energy aware for spirit communication.

Following the walk and workshop, guests will be split into smaller groups to carry out vigils throughout the venue. These vigils may include séances, table tipping, planchette work, and glass moving. Occasionally a spirit board will be used.

Following the group vigils there will be free time to carry out your own vigils around the venue.

2. What equipment should I bring?

During the event the lights will be off so it is important that you bring a torch. Video and stills cameras are also welcome, as well as any other equipment you feel may aid your investigations.

3. Are refreshments provided?

Throughout the night there will be scheduled breaks for hot drinks and snacks. This generally consists of tea, coffee, squash, crisps and chocolate biscuits. If a meal is included this will be detailed on the event page.

4. Can I stay with my party members?

We will always try to keep guests that have booked together in the same groups.

5. Are there any special clothing requirements?

It is advisable to wear warm clothing as venues can get cold at night, especially during the winter, and some may involve outside vigils. Some venues are in damp caves, dusty rooms or outside, so it is also advisable to wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty. Please also ensure you wear sensible and comfortable footwear, appropriate to climbing stairs, outside vigils, etc.

6. Will somebody be available to answer my questions?

The UK Ghost Nights team will available throughout the event to answer any questions you may have and to help you get the most out of your paranormal ghost hunt.

7. Is accommodation included in the price?

No, accommodation is not included in the price. Some event locations may be able to provide accommodation, but this will need to be arranged with the venue separately.

8. What are ghosts?

Ghosts, or spirits as they are often called, are said to be a manifestation of a deceased person. It is believed to be the spirit energy or soul of those that have died. People all over the world and in all walks of life believe different things when it comes to what ghosts and spirits are, and if they really do exist or are just figments of our imagination. Ghost stories have been told throughout the years and many places are said to be haunted by ghosts, good and bad.

9. What are orbs and 'light anomalies'?

'Orb' is the popular name given to typically circular anomalies appearing in photographs. Orbs are often thought to be the spirits of people, and appear as balls of light floating or moving in the picture. Orbs can appear in colours, such as blue, red, etc. However orbs can be caused by the flash reflecting off walls, dust, moisture or even insects. Some orbs are definitely spirit energy. The problem arises as no one really knows what this energy is. Spirit orbs will normally have a more solid centre. Paranormal orbs have even been photographed with faces appearing within them. Whether they are dust or spirit is for you to decide.

10. I've heard the term 'residual energy'. What is this?

Residual energy is the term given to energy that seems to record past events. In alleged haunted locations this energy is said to keep playing over and over again and is believed to be the energy left by spirits with strong emotions at the time of their death.

11. What is 'table tipping'?

'Table tipping' is where team members sit around a table with their hands lightly resting upon the table top. The group make sure that no other part of their bodies are touching the table. Silence is asked for, and when everyone is relaxed and quiet one person will ask out loud if there are any spirits present who would like to communicate using the table. We ask the spirits if they will use the table as a way of communicating by making it turn or tip, or by tapping on the table. We always ask specific questions e.g. 'are you a male? If the answer is yes please turn or tilt or tap the table once.' We specify in which direction the table should be turned for "yes" and "no" or how many taps for "yes" and "no".
